Asset Based Community Development: Jim Diers

Asset Based Community Development concentrates first upon the agenda building and problem-solving capacities of local residents, local associations, and local institutions. The internal focus stresses the primacy of local definition, investment, creativity, hope, and control. The process is "relationship driven." Asset-based community development constantly builds and rebuilds the relationships between and among local residents, local associations, and local institutions.

Jim Diers has 28 years of professional experience in the field of community engagement, having worked for a grassroots organization, a community development corporation, a large non-profit organization, and city government. Much of his work has been focused on Southeast Seattle where Jim and his family have lived for the past 26 years. Jim served as director of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods for 14 years where he developed innovative programs of community engagement that are now being replicated in other cities throughout the United States and beyond. In 2001, the Municipal League of King County recognized Jim as Public Employee of the Year.

Jim currently serves on the faculty of the Asset Based Community Development Institute of Northwestern University, is an adjunct faculty of the University of Washington School of Architecture and City Planning and is frequently called upon to facilitate community-mapping processes.
